Spring is right around the corner! That means it’s time for spring cleaning too.
As the weather gets warmer, pests become more active. Regular cleaning like sweeping, vacuuming, and regular laundry can go a long way to help with preventing pest problems. In addition to the usual spring-cleaning tasks, here are some ways to help ensure a pest-free home:
Kitchen
Pests like ants, mice, and pantry pests tend to infest kitchens because they have food and water available.
- Empty cabinets and pantry. Discard stale items and store foods in hard, sealing containers.
- Wipe down or vacuum inside of cabinets and drawers, making sure to remove any crumbs.
- Vacuum under and behind appliances and scrub off any residue from spills or cooking
Bathroom
Cockroaches, silverfish, and house centipedes are commonly found in bathrooms because they are attracted to water.
- Check for leaks around sink, tub, and toilet.
- Clean drains in the sink and tub and repair any clogs.
Basement
Rodents, spiders, and other pests can take refuge in basements because there tend to be lots of hiding places in clutter.
- Declutter as much as possible and store items in plastic bins with secure lids (try to avoid cardboard boxes.)
- Seal cracks and crevices with silicone-based caulk, or have foundational repairs made if needed.
- If humidity is an issue, install a dehumidifier.
Outdoors
Deteriorating wood, standing water, and yard debris can foster environments for pests, which can then make their way inside.
- Inspect for potential repairs, including fascia and roof shingles, ripped screens, loose mortar, and damaged weather-stripping.
- Clean out gutters and downspouts before the April showers start.
- Trim bushes and branches 15” away from the home.
- Remove rotted tree stumps, keep firewood at least 20 feet from your home, and keep mulch 15 inches away from the foundation, as these can attract termites and other insects.
Year-round cleaning tips for pest prevention:
- Clean up crumbs and spills when they happen. Avoid leaving dishes with food debris or standing water overnight, since pests are most active at night and can make a meal out of crumbs.
- Vacuum and wash linens and bedding regularly. This can help prevent pests that tend to live in fibers, like fleas, carpet beetles, and bed bugs. If you do find evidence of these pests, give us a call.
- Groom pets regularly and inspect for fleas and ticks. Make sure to pick up any pet waste, which attracts pests like flies and rodents.
- Make sure trash cans are secure and undamaged. Repair or replace receptacles that have cracks or holes, which allow pests like rodents to access food sources in trash.
